Picture this…
You plop down on your couch next to a sunny window, turn on your kindle, and smile as you click on the newest book you’ve bought. Your heart thunders in excitement as you are swept off into an engaging, fantastical world with riveting plot twists, pretty clean content, and characters that capture your heart.
But something’s wrong. Your beloved characters are relentlessly pounded by the villain or get worse rather than better. You shake your head and dismiss this. People struggle. So what? The story will get better.
To your dismay, it doesn’t. Your favorite character turns evil or compromises his values, and your protagonist’s inner demons still have him in a firm choke hold–even during the main battle! You finish the book, mind wandering back to the other stories you read. Stories where characters drowned in darkness or where evil won. You glare at the kindle and consider smashing it into the nearest wall. Why can’t you read just one book where characters persevere, conquer their inner demons, and triumph over evil?
Fantasy should fill us with hope and wonder. Why settle for dark and depressing?
About me
I write YA fantasy that not only sweeps readers into a magical world of adventure, but models victory over darkness and difficulty. I spend most of my days crafting stories about young heroes and honing my writing skills through the Author Conservatory, a college alternative for gifted writers. Otherwise, I can be found hiking with my family, theorizing with my sister about some new story we’ve seen, and playing background music to a daydream unfolding in my head.
